Geneva – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported a significant increase in the number of Sudanese refugees arriving in Europe during the first two months of 2025. According to a statement released on April 11th, approximately 484 Sudanese refugees reached European shores in January and February, marking a 38% increase compared to the same period last year.

The UNHCR also highlighted a dramatic rise in the number of Sudanese refugees intercepted or rescued at sea. In the first two months of 2025, some 937 Sudanese refugees were rescued or intercepted, more than double the figure recorded during the same period in 2024.

This surge in Sudanese refugees seeking asylum in Europe underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis and instability within Sudan. While the UNHCR report does not delve into the specific drivers behind this increase, it is likely linked to a complex interplay of factors, including:

  • Persistent Conflict and Violence: Sudan has been grappling with internal conflicts and political instability for years, forcing many to flee their homes in search of safety.
  • Economic Hardship: Widespread poverty, unemployment, and lack of economic opportunity contribute to the desperation driving people to seek a better life elsewhere.
  • Climate Change Impacts: Environmental degradation, including droughts and desertification, exacerbates existing vulnerabilities and contributes to displacement.

The increased number of refugees attempting the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea raises serious concerns about their safety and well-being. The UNHCR has repeatedly called for increased international cooperation to address the root causes of displacement and to provide safe and legal pathways for refugees seeking protection.

The situation demands a comprehensive response that includes:

  • Addressing the Root Causes: Investing in peacebuilding, good governance, and sustainable development in Sudan to address the underlying drivers of displacement.
  • Strengthening Protection Mechanisms: Providing adequate reception facilities, asylum procedures, and integration support for refugees arriving in Europe.
  • Enhancing Search and Rescue Operations: Ensuring effective search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea to prevent further loss of life.
  • Promoting Responsibility Sharing: Encouraging greater solidarity and responsibility sharing among European countries in accommodating refugees.

The UNHCR’s report serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict and instability. Addressing the needs of Sudanese refugees requires a concerted effort by the international community to provide humanitarian assistance, promote peace and stability, and ensure that those seeking refuge are treated with dignity and respect.
