Paris, April 10th – Mount Paektu, a revered and iconic volcano straddling the border between North Korea and China, has been officially recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The designation, approved by the UNESCO Executive Board on April 10th, marks a significant milestone as North Korea’s first entry into the prestigious network.
The UNESCO Global Geoparks Council highlighted the mountain’s dramatic volcanic landscape, sculpted by eruptions and characterized by unique caldera formations resulting from glacial erosion. This recognition underscores the geological significance and natural beauty of Mount Paektu, also known as Changbaishan in China.
This designation follows China’s successful inscription of its portion of the Paektu/Changbaishan range as a UNESCO Global Geopark last year. The addition of the North Korean side creates a transboundary geopark, further emphasizing the region’s shared geological heritage.
North Korea initially submitted its application for UNESCO Global Geopark status for Mount Paektu in 2019, preceding China’s submission. However, on-site assessments were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a postponement of the approval process.
Beyond Mount Paektu, South Korea also saw success in expanding its UNESCO Global Geopark portfolio. The Danyang Geopark and the Gyeongsangbuk-do East Coast Geopark were also newly designated, bringing South Korea’s total to seven UNESCO Global Geoparks.
The designation of Mount Paektu as a UNESCO Global Geopark is expected to boost tourism to the region and promote greater awareness of its unique geological features. It also provides a framework for sustainable development and conservation efforts, ensuring the long-term preservation of this natural wonder. The North Korean Central Television has previously broadcasted documentaries showcasing the Eight Views of Mount Paektu, further highlighting the cultural and natural significance of the mountain.
Conclusion:
The inclusion of Mount Paektu in the UNESCO Global Geopark network is a significant achievement for North Korea, highlighting the country’s commitment to recognizing and preserving its natural heritage. This designation not only acknowledges the geological significance of the mountain but also opens doors for sustainable tourism and conservation efforts. As the first UNESCO Global Geopark in North Korea, Mount Paektu sets a precedent for future designations and underscores the importance of international collaboration in protecting our planet’s unique geological landscapes.
