Seoul, South Korea – After a hiatus of over five years, trade ministers from South Korea, China, and Japan convened in Seoul on March 30th for the 13th Trilateral Trade Ministers’ Meeting. The gathering, held at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul’s Jung-gu district, signaled a renewed commitment to economic cooperation among the three East Asian powerhouses.

The meeting saw the participation of South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ahn Duk-geun, Chinese Minister of Commerce, Wang Wentao, and Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Mutoh Yuji. Discussions centered on the shared recognition of the necessity for strengthened economic cooperation and the agreement to expand collaborative efforts across various sectors.

The ministers reaffirmed the importance of trilateral cooperation in fostering regional and global economic prosperity and stability. Beyond general commitments, the discussions delved into specific areas, including global trade issues, industrial collaboration, and energy cooperation.

The resumption of these high-level talks marks a significant step forward in regional diplomacy and economic integration. The previous meeting took place in Beijing in December 2019, making the Seoul gathering a crucial opportunity to revitalize trilateral relations after a prolonged period of disruption, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions.
