Seoul, April 7 (Yonhap) – When foreigners think of Korea, the first thing that comes to mind is Korean pop music, or K-Pop. For the eighth consecutive year, K-Pop has been identified as the most representative image of South Korea.

This is according to the 2025 Survey on the Status of Korean Wave (based on 2024 data) released on April 7 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea International Cultural Exchange Agency. The survey revealed that 17.8% of respondents who had experienced Korean Wave content said that K-Pop was the first thing they thought of when they thought of Korea. This was followed by Korean food, Korean dramas, beauty products, and movies.

The global phenomenon of K-Pop has undoubtedly reshaped the international perception of South Korea. What was once a relatively obscure nation on the global stage has now become synonymous with catchy tunes, synchronized choreography, and meticulously crafted idol groups. This shift reflects the power of cultural exports in shaping national image and fostering international recognition.

BTS and BLACKPINK Continue to Dominate the K-Pop Landscape

In the survey, BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan) ranked first as the most popular K-Pop artist for the seventh consecutive year. The girl group BLACKPINK ranked second for the sixth consecutive year. BTS member Jungkook and BLACKPINK member Lisa also ranked high on the list.

The continued dominance of BTS and BLACKPINK underscores their immense global influence and enduring appeal. These groups have not only achieved remarkable commercial success but have also played a significant role in promoting Korean culture and language worldwide. Their music transcends linguistic barriers, resonating with fans from diverse backgrounds and solidifying K-Pop’s position as a global cultural force.

The Enduring Power of the Korean Wave

The survey results highlight the enduring power of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) in shaping perceptions of South Korea abroad. While K-Pop remains the most prominent element, other aspects of Korean culture, such as food, dramas, and beauty products, also contribute to the country’s overall image.

This multifaceted appeal suggests that the Korean Wave is not merely a fleeting trend but a sustained cultural phenomenon with the potential to further enhance South Korea’s global standing. As K-Pop continues to evolve and diversify, it is likely to remain a key driver of South Korea’s cultural diplomacy and a powerful tool for promoting the country’s image on the world stage.

Looking Ahead

The continued popularity of K-Pop as the most representative image of South Korea presents both opportunities and challenges. South Korea can leverage this cultural capital to further promote its tourism industry, attract foreign investment, and strengthen its diplomatic ties. However, it is also crucial to ensure that the K-Pop industry remains sustainable and ethical, addressing issues such as artist welfare and fair labor practices.

By addressing these challenges and capitalizing on its cultural strengths, South Korea can ensure that the Korean Wave continues to flourish and contribute to the country’s long-term prosperity and global influence.
