Seoul, April 7th – South Korean financial markets experienced a tumultuous day on Monday, with both major stock indices plummeting over 5% and the Korean Won suffering its largest single-day drop against the US dollar in five years. The market turmoil was triggered by anxieties surrounding newly implemented US tariff policies.

According to data released by the Korea Exchange, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) closed at 2,328.2, a sharp decline of 137.22 points, or 5.57%, from the previous trading day. The tech-heavy KOSDAQ also took a significant hit, closing at 651.3, down 36.09 points, or 5.25%.

The currency market mirrored the stock market’s distress. Heightened risk aversion, fueled by the uncertainty surrounding the US tariff measures, led to a significant depreciation of the Korean Won. As of 3:30 PM local time in Seoul, the Won traded at 1,467.8 against the US dollar, a fall of 33.7 Won from the previous session. This represents the largest single-day decline since March 19, 2020, during the initial outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the Won fell by 40 against the dollar.

The sharp declines in both the stock and currency markets reflect growing concerns among investors about the potential impact of the new US tariffs on the South Korean economy, which is heavily reliant on exports. The tariffs are expected to increase the cost of Korean goods sold in the US, potentially reducing demand and impacting corporate profitability.

The situation remains fluid, and market participants will be closely monitoring developments in US trade policy and their potential ramifications for the South Korean economy. Further volatility is expected in the near term as investors assess the long-term implications of these new trade barriers.
