After a 14-year hiatus, the prestigious DOTA 2 tournament, The International (TI), is returning to its birthplace in Germany. Valve Corporation has announced that The International 2025 (TI14) will be held in Hamburg, culminating in the grand finals on September 14th. This highly anticipated event marks a significant moment for the DOTA 2 community, bringing the world’s best teams back to the city where the game’s competitive scene first took root.

A New Format on the Road to TI14

The road to TI14 promises to be a grueling test of skill and strategy. Valve has outlined a revised format for the Road to The International, designed to winnow down the sixteen invited teams to the eight that will ultimately compete on the main stage.

The journey begins with a five-round Swiss stage. For the first three days, teams will face opponents with identical records in best-of-three (BO3) matches. Teams with a 2-0 record will face another 2-0 team, while those with a 1-3 record will battle another 1-3 team, and so on. Securing four victories in this stage guarantees a coveted spot at The International. Conversely, suffering four losses results in elimination.

Following the Swiss stage, the remaining ten teams will enter a special elimination bracket. In a strongest vs. weakest format, the winners will advance to The International, while the losers will be eliminated.

The Road to The International will span from Thursday, September 4th, to Sunday, September 7th, encompassing both the Swiss stage and the subsequent elimination bracket. In total, eight of the sixteen invited teams will be eliminated during this phase, leaving the remaining eight to battle for the Aegis of Champions in Hamburg.

The International: A Four-Day Showdown

The International itself will kick off on Thursday, September 11th, and culminate in the grand finals on Sunday, September 14th. The eight teams that successfully navigated the Road to The International will compete in front of thousands of fans at the Barclays Arena.

All eight teams will begin in the upper bracket of a standard double-elimination tournament. Seeding will be determined based on their performance during the Road to The International, with the highest-ranked teams facing the lowest-ranked teams. All matches, except for the grand finals, will be best-of-three. The grand finals will be a best-of-five series, where the ultimate champion will be crowned.

A Return to Glory

The return of The International to Germany marks a full-circle moment for DOTA 2. The new format, coupled with the passionate German fanbase, sets the stage for a truly unforgettable tournament.
