Beijing, April 5, 2025 – China’s civil aviation sector is demonstrating strong vitality during the Qingming Festival holiday, with small-city branch routes playing a key role in stimulating regional tourism economies.

According to CCTV, on April 4th, the civil aviation sector is estimated to have handled 16,244 flights, transporting approximately 1.82 million passengers. It is projected that during the entire Qingming holiday period, the national civil aviation system will complete a passenger throughput of 5.4 million, representing a 7.4% increase compared to the same period last year.

This surge in air travel highlights the growing demand for tourism and travel, particularly to and from smaller cities. These branch routes are proving crucial in connecting these regions, facilitating easier access for tourists and stimulating local economies. The increased connectivity allows travelers to explore lesser-known destinations, contributing to a more balanced and sustainable tourism landscape across the country.

The Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, is a traditional Chinese holiday where people pay respects to their ancestors and often travel to their hometowns or scenic spots. The robust performance of the civil aviation sector during this period underscores the importance of air travel in supporting both traditional customs and the burgeoning tourism industry.

The growth in passenger numbers also reflects the continued recovery and expansion of China’s economy. As disposable incomes rise, more people are choosing to travel, further fueling the demand for air travel and supporting the development of regional economies. The civil aviation sector is poised to play an increasingly important role in connecting people, fostering economic growth, and promoting cultural exchange across China.
