Seoul, South Korea – South Korean police have initiated their highest level of emergency response as the Constitutional Court prepares to deliver its verdict on the impeachment case against President Yoon Suk-yeol on April 4th.
Starting from midnight, the National Police Agency issued Emergency Order No. 1, placing the entire police force on high alert. This move underscores the potential for heightened tensions and public unrest surrounding the highly anticipated ruling.
South Korea’s police alert system is structured in three levels: Alpha, Beta, and Gamma, each allowing for the mobilization of 100%, 50%, and 30% of available police resources, respectively. With the activation of the highest-level Alpha alert, police officers will face restrictions on leave, and commanders and staff will be required to remain on duty, ensuring constant and immediate communication.
To maintain order and security, police have deployed over 20,000 officers from 338 mobile units nationwide. In Seoul alone, approximately 14,000 officers from 210 mobile units will be stationed in key areas, including Gwanghwamun and the presidential residence.
Recognizing the potential for large gatherings, police have designated the Jongno and Gwanghwamun areas, where significant crowds are expected, as Special Crime Prevention Zones. Senior commanding officers will be present to oversee security measures and manage any potential disturbances.
The impeachment case against President Yoon has deeply divided the nation, and the court’s decision is expected to have significant political and social ramifications. The police’s heightened state of alert reflects the authorities’ concerns about potential reactions to the ruling and their commitment to maintaining public safety and order.
