Jeju, South Korea – In a move towards fostering international understanding and promoting peace education, the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education and the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education in China have launched a joint exchange program. The six-day Peace Education International Exchange Project commenced on April 1st in Jeju, aiming to provide students from both regions with a platform to learn about historical tragedies and reflect on the importance of peace.
The initiative, as reported by Yonhap News Agency on April 2nd, will see students delve into the Jeju April 3 Incident (also known as the 4.3 incident) and the Nanjing Massacre, two significant events that underscore the devastating consequences of conflict and violence.
A delegation from the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, led by Zhang Lili, a second-level inspector, arrived in Jeju on invitation. The delegation includes five staff members, two teachers from Nanjing Foreign Language School, and twenty students.
One of the key events of the exchange will be the delegation’s participation in the 77th Commemoration Ceremony for the Victims of the Jeju 4.3 Incident at the Jeju 4.3 Peace Park on April 3rd. Following the ceremony, the delegation will engage in joint classes with students from Jeju High School.
The collaborative learning sessions will focus on historical atrocities such as the Holocaust, the Jeju 4.3 Incident, and the Nanjing Massacre. Through these discussions, students will explore the universal values of peace and the critical importance of preventing future tragedies.
On April 4th, the delegation is scheduled to visit Jeju. This educational exchange program represents a significant step towards promoting cross-cultural understanding and fostering a shared commitment to peace among the younger generation. By learning from the past, these students will be better equipped to build a more peaceful and just future.
