Beijing, March 13, 2025 (Xinhua) – Taiwan’s Vice President Lai Ching-te’s recent remarks regarding Taiwan’s status have drawn sharp condemnation from Beijing. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office (国台办), issued a statement today criticizing Lai’s pronouncements as separatist fallacies and a deliberate attempt to escalate cross-strait tensions.

According to the China News Service (中新社), Chen’s statement was a direct response to Lai’s address following a self-proclaimed National Security High-Level Meeting. In that address, Lai reportedly reiterated the two sides are not subordinate to each other (两岸“互不隶属”) argument, falsely asserted that Taiwan is a sovereign and independent democratic country (台湾是一个主权独立的民主国家), and amplified the narrative of a mainland threat (大陆威胁), even going so far as to label mainland China as a hostile external force (境外敌对势力). Lai also outlined what he termed a five-pronged approach (因应五方面), presumably to counter the perceived threat from the mainland.

Chen Binhua strongly refuted Lai’s claims, accusing him of deliberately distorting facts and misleading the Taiwanese public. These remarks are a blatant challenge to the one-China principle and a serious provocation to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, Chen stated. He further emphasized that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and that any attempt to pursue Taiwan independence is doomed to fail.

The statement from the Taiwan Affairs Office underscores the heightened sensitivity surrounding Taiwan’s political status and the potential for further escalation in cross-strait relations. Lai’s remarks, particularly the characterization of mainland China as a hostile external force, are likely to further inflame tensions and complicate efforts to find common ground.

This incident highlights the ongoing and deeply entrenched differences between Beijing and Taipei regarding Taiwan’s future. While the Taiwanese government, particularly under the current administration, has sought to assert its autonomy and strengthen its international standing, Beijing remains steadfast in its commitment to eventual reunification, by force if necessary.

The international community is closely watching developments in the Taiwan Strait, with many nations urging both sides to exercise restraint and engage in constructive dialogue. However, with both sides seemingly hardening their positions, the prospects for a peaceful resolution to the Taiwan issue remain uncertain.

Moving Forward: The path forward requires a commitment to dialogue and a willingness to address the underlying concerns on both sides. While the current climate is fraught with tension, it is crucial to maintain open channels of communication and explore potential avenues for cooperation. Ignoring the issue or resorting to inflammatory rhetoric will only exacerbate the situation and increase the risk of conflict.
