Cupertino, CA – Apple has quietly addressed a keyboard design inconsistency that has plagued Mac users for 26 years. The change, first spotted on the new MacBook Air powered by the M4 chip, involves a subtle but significant update to the mute key icon.
Since the introduction of the mute key on the PowerBook G3 Lombard in 1999, the key has featured a speaker icon. However, pressing the key resulted in a different icon – a speaker with a strikethrough – appearing on the macOS screen to indicate that the device was muted. This discrepancy has long been a source of minor annoyance for detail-oriented Mac users.
The updated mute key icon now displays a speaker with a strikethrough, aligning perfectly with the on-screen indicator in macOS. This change provides a more intuitive visual cue that the key will mute the Mac’s audio output.
While the mute key functions as a toggle, switching between muted and unmuted states, the new icon design clarifies the key’s function.
The redesigned mute key is not exclusive to the MacBook Air. The new Magic Keyboard for the latest iPad Air also features the updated icon. This represents a double upgrade for iPad Air users, as the previous Magic Keyboard lacked function keys altogether.
The updated mute key design is expected to become standard across all Mac models. The upcoming MacBook Pro, anticipated to be released around October with the M5 chip, is also likely to adopt the new key icon.
This seemingly minor change resolves a long-standing design inconsistency that has persisted through numerous Mac keyboard iterations. It demonstrates Apple’s commitment to refining even the smallest details of its products.
