Beijing, March 6 (Xinhua) – For centuries, the intricate embroidery and craftsmanship of Guizhou’s ethnic minorities have been a source of cultural pride and a vital part of the region’s heritage. Now, thanks to digital transformation, these exquisite handicrafts are reaching wider markets and empowering local artisans like never before.
This is the message brought to the National People’s Congress (NPC) by Deputy Xia Hua, a long-time advocate for Guizhou’s traditional arts. Xia, who has dedicated the past two decades to supporting the region’s artisans, emphasized the transformative power of digitalization in a recent interview.
Twenty years ago, I led a team of designers into the remote mountains of Guizhou and was deeply captivated by the exquisite embroidery in the hands of the local women, Xia recounted. From that moment, I committed myself to training these artisans, establishing workshops, and connecting them with market opportunities.
Over the past two decades, Xia’s efforts have yielded remarkable results. Her initiative has trained 25,000 embroiderers and established 1,600 family-based workshops, forging a path towards the digitalization, modernization, and commercialization of ethnic handicrafts.
The key to this success lies in leveraging digital platforms to connect Guizhou’s artisans with consumers across China and beyond. E-commerce platforms, social media marketing, and online design collaborations have opened up new avenues for these traditional crafts to reach a global audience.
Furthermore, digitalization has enabled artisans to access training resources, design inspiration, and market information, empowering them to adapt their skills and create products that resonate with contemporary tastes. This blend of tradition and innovation is crucial for ensuring the long-term sustainability of Guizhou’s handicraft industry.
Xia’s work highlights the potential of digital transformation to not only preserve cultural heritage but also to drive economic development in rural areas. By embracing technology and fostering innovation, Guizhou is proving that traditional arts can thrive in the digital age.
Looking ahead, Xia envisions a future where Guizhou’s ethnic handicrafts become a symbol of the region’s unique cultural identity and a source of pride for its people. With continued investment in digital infrastructure, training programs, and market access, she believes that these exquisite creations will continue to travel further and flourish.
