Seoul, March 2, 2025 – With South Korea’s presidential impeachment proceedings hindering normal summit diplomacy, relations with China are poised to take center stage in Seoul’s diplomatic agenda for March. While February saw a flurry of activity with the South Korea-U.S. Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the South Korea-U.S.-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held during the 61st Munich Security Conference, March is expected to bring both a South Korea-China Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and a South Korea-China-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

The diplomatic spotlight shifts towards Beijing as Seoul navigates a period of domestic political instability. The impeachment proceedings have effectively put a pause on high-level summit diplomacy, making the cultivation of relations with key regional partners even more critical.

According to diplomatic sources on March 2nd, South Korean, Chinese, and Japanese foreign ministries are in the final stages of coordinating a trilateral foreign ministers’ meeting to be held in Tokyo on March 22nd. This would mark the first such gathering in a year and four months, following the meeting held in Busan in November 2023. The ministers are expected to exchange views on matters including the possibility of holding a trilateral leaders’ summit in Japan within the year.

The potential for a trilateral leaders’ summit later this year underscores the importance of this upcoming foreign ministers’ meeting. It provides a crucial platform for laying the groundwork and addressing potential sticking points before leaders from the three nations convene.

Conclusion:

As South Korea grapples with internal political challenges, the focus on strengthening ties with China and Japan signals a strategic pivot towards regional diplomacy. The upcoming meetings in March represent a significant opportunity to foster cooperation and address shared interests, potentially paving the way for a leaders’ summit and a more stable and prosperous future for Northeast Asia. The success of these diplomatic endeavors will be crucial in navigating the current political landscape and ensuring South Korea’s continued role as a key player in the region.
