A Landmark Achievement for Valve’s Pioneering Device

Three years after its initial release on February 25, 2022, Valve’s Steam Deck has solidified its position as the undisputed leader in the handheld PC gaming market. According to the latest data from IDC, reported by The Verge, the Steam Deck has shipped over 3.7 million units. This number is likely to have surpassed the 4 million mark as of today, dwarfing the combined sales of all its Windows-based competitors.

Steam Deck vs. The Competition: A Clear Winner

The Steam Deck’s success is even more striking when compared to its rivals, including the ASUS ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and MSI Claw. From 2022 to 2024, total shipments of these Windows-based handhelds reached approximately 6 million units, with the Steam Deck capturing over 60% of the market share.

Here’s a breakdown of the shipment figures:

  • 2022: 1.62 million units (all Steam Deck)
  • 2023: 2.867 million units (Steam Deck accounted for over 50%)
  • 2024: 1.485 million units (Steam Deck accounted for 48%)
  • 2025 (Projected): 1.926 million units

A Testament to AMD’s Handheld PC Push

AMD’s Senior Director of Consumer Marketing, Saša Marinković, noted that handheld gaming PCs powered by AMD processors have collectively shipped nearly 8 million units in the past four years. This highlights the significant role AMD plays in powering this burgeoning market.

Future of Steam Deck and the Handheld PC Market

While the Steam Deck’s hardware may struggle to run the latest AAA titles at optimal settings, Valve has stated that it will only release a second-generation device when it can achieve a significant performance leap without compromising battery life. The company is currently not considering adopting AMD’s 2024 Z2 chip.

Frank Azor, AMD’s Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions, considers the growth of this new category, from zero to millions of units shipped, to be a remarkable achievement.

Despite IDC’s projection that handheld PC shipments will remain below 2 million units in 2025, the potential for explosive growth in this emerging category remains significant.

Conclusion

The Steam Deck’s impressive sales figures and market dominance underscore its success in carving out a new niche in the gaming landscape. While challenges remain in terms of performance and competition, the Steam Deck has proven that there is a strong demand for portable PC gaming experiences. As technology advances and competition intensifies, the handheld PC market is poised for further innovation and growth, with the Steam Deck leading the charge.
