Beijing – A significant realignment is underway in China’s rapidly evolving artificial intelligence (AI) landscape. Tech giants Tencent and Baidu are integrating the DeepSeek model into their core services, while ByteDance is reportedly reassessing its strategy in response to the advancements of DeepSeek. This shift is accelerating the divergence among China’s leading AI players, often referred to as the Big Six or Little Six in the large language model (LLM) space.

The move by Tencent and Baidu underscores the growing recognition of DeepSeek’s capabilities. Tencent’s WeChat has launched a limited AI Search function, powered by the DeepSeek-R1 model, offering users a deep thinking search experience. Baidu, not to be outdone, swiftly announced the full integration of DeepSeek and its own Ernie (Wenxin) LLM into its search engine, enhancing its deep search capabilities. Furthermore, Baidu’s Ernie Bot platform will also incorporate DeepSeek, enabling developers to leverage its capabilities for building and fine-tuning AI agents.

According to Titanium Media AGI, users with access to the WeChat AI Search beta can access the full-fledged DeepSeek-R1 model directly from the search bar at the top of their chat windows. Tencent has also integrated DeepSeek into other products, including Tencent Yuanbao, QQ Browser, and QQ Music.

However, the initial surge in demand for WeChat’s AI Search proved challenging. Within a day of launch, users began encountering service busy messages, indicating the system was struggling to handle the heavy load.

The integration of DeepSeek into Tencent and Baidu’s core services reflects a broader trend of specialization and collaboration within the Chinese AI ecosystem. Some companies are choosing to embrace DeepSeek’s technology, while others continue to focus on developing their own proprietary models.

Goldman Sachs, in a recent research report, highlighted Tencent as one of the first companies to deeply integrate the DeepSeek-R1-671B model’s deep thinking mode.

This strategic shift comes at a time when AI-powered search tools are gaining traction among Chinese internet users. A recent survey indicated that 59% of respondents primarily use AI search tools, while traditional search engines like Baidu account for only 22%. The integration of AI search into WeChat, with its massive user base, is expected to further accelerate this trend, particularly among younger demographics.

The developments at Tencent, Baidu, and ByteDance highlight the dynamic nature of China’s AI industry. As companies navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by LLMs, the landscape is likely to continue to evolve, with potential implications for the future of search, content creation, and other AI-driven applications.
