Harbin, China – February 12, 2024 – North Korean figure skating pair Ryom Tae-ok and Han Kum-chol clinched the silver medal in the pairs event at the Harbin Asian Winter Games on Monday, securing the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) first medal of the competition.
The duo achieved a total score of 168.88 after the free skate program, which concluded on February 12th. Their performance consisted of a free skate score of 112.20 and a short program score of 56.68.
Ryom and Han’s combined score placed them second overall, narrowly behind the Uzbekistani pair, who took gold with a score of 176.43.
This silver medal marks the DPRK’s first podium finish at the current Asian Winter Games. It also extends a notable streak for North Korean pair skaters, who have medaled in the event for three consecutive games, dating back to the 2011 Astana-Almaty Asian Winter Games. Ryom Tae-ok has been a part of the medal-winning team for two consecutive games.
The competition took place at the Heilongjiang Ice Sports Training Center Complex in Harbin.
This achievement is expected to be celebrated back in the DPRK and could potentially boost morale within the nation’s sporting community. It remains to be seen if this success will translate into further medals for the DPRK delegation as the Asian Winter Games continue.
