Korean Double Bassist Ryu Si-heon Makes History, Winning Prestigious Bottesini Competition
Seoul, South Korea – A 19-year-old Koreandouble bassist, Ryu Si-heon, has made history by becoming the first Korean to win the prestigious Bottesini International Double Bass Competition in Italy.
The competition, held in its ninth iteration this year, concluded on October 27th. Ryu Si-heon secured the top prize with his performance of the Concerto in B Minor for Double Bass. He also received the special award for performers under 25 years of age.
Established in 1989 to honor renowned double bassist and conductor Giovanni Bottesini, the competitionattracts talented musicians under 35 years old from around the world. Previous Korean winners include Hwang Joon-bin and Kim Hyang-ju, who both achieved third place in 2019 and 2022 respectively.
