Polish Tech Whiz Spends a Decade Building a Zombie Robot
A Polish robotics company, Clone Robotics, has unveiled its latest creation: Torso, abipedal robot powered by artificial muscles. The robot, which has been in development for over a decade, is a testament to the company’s unique approach torobotics, favoring hydraulics over electric motors.
Torso is an unconventional robot. Its exposed wires resemble muscle fibers, running across its two arms. Its carbon fiber chesthouses a complex valve system, and its head, devoid of facial features, gives it a decidedly zombie aesthetic. However, many online observers have likened it to the Hosts from the HBO series Westworld, due to its pale, almost translucent skin.
Despite its unsettling appearance, Torso moves with surprising fluidity. Its head can rotate in all directions, albeit somewhat stiffly, but its movements are coordinated with its neck. Every joint, from its shoulders to its fingertips,is articulated, allowing it to strike a variety of poses. It can raise its arms in a fist, swing them in a robotic dance, and even perform a bow gesture. As Nvidia scientist Jim Fan remarked, Torso possesses a weird beauty in its movements.
A Westworld Inspiration
CloneRobotics has dedicated itself to building biomimetic robots, similar to those seen in Westworld. However, unlike companies like Tesla, Boston Dynamics, Figure, and Agility, which rely on electric motors, Clone Robotics has chosen a different path, embracing hydraulics. This unconventional approach has resulted in a robot with a distinctlook and feel.
A Long and Winding Road
Torso’s journey from concept to reality has been a long one. Clone Robotics spent over a decade refining its design and technology. The company also launched a crowdfunding campaign that lasted for 18 months, raising funds to bring its vision to life.
The Future of Robotics
Torso’s unveiling is a significant milestone for Clone Robotics and the field of robotics. The company’s commitment to hydraulics opens up new possibilities for robot design and functionality. While Torso’s zombie aesthetic may not be for everyone, its unique capabilities and unconventional approachto robotics are sure to spark debate and inspire further innovation in the field.
