Frozen Waffles Recalled: Listeria Risk Prompts Nationwide Recall
Aflurry of frozen waffle products, sold at major supermarkets across the U.S.and Canada, have been recalled due to potential listeria contamination. The recall, announced by TreeHouse Foods, a leading manufacturer of private-label food products, affects a wide range of brands including store-brand waffles sold at Walmart, Target, Publix, Harris Teeter, Food Lion, and Tops, as well aspopular brands like Kodiak Cakes, Simple Truth, and Foodhold.
The recall stems from routine testing at one of TreeHouse Foods’ manufacturing facilities, which revealed the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that cancause serious illness. While no confirmed cases of illness linked to the recalled waffles have been reported, the company is taking a proactive approach to protect public health.
Listeria contamination has been a growing concern in the U.S.this year, with a series of outbreaks linked to deli meat resulting in 10 deaths across 19 states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that over 11 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products have also been recalled due to listeria concerns.
Listeria infections typically cause flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, and fatigue. However, the bacteria can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations, including older adults, people with weakened immune systems, newborns, and pregnant women.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) are aware of the recall and are working with TreeHouse Foods to ensure the affected products are removed from circulation. Consumers are urged to check their freezers for any of the recalled waffle products and discard them immediately.
This recall serves as a stark reminder of the importance of food safety and the need for manufacturers tomaintain rigorous quality control measures. The CDC recommends that consumers always practice safe food handling techniques, such as washing hands thoroughly before and after handling food, and cooking food to the proper temperature.
