Just asElon Musk announced Tesla’s entry into the Robotaxi market, Chinese Robotaxi unicorn Pony.ai secured a significant investment from GAC Group, a majorChinese automaker.

GAC’s investment, totaling $27 million (approximately 190 million yuan), signifies a strong vote of confidence in Pony.ai’s capabilities. The investment comes as Pony.ai prepares for its initial public offering (IPO), having already secured over $1.1 billion (approximately 7.8 billion yuan) in funding across multiple rounds since its inception in 2016. This strategic partnership between GAC and Pony.ai is not a new development. The two companies have been collaborating for several years, with Pony.ai serving as a strategic investor in GAC’s ride-hailing platform, Ruqi Chuxing, in 2022.The same year, they launched a pilot program in Guangzhou’s Nansha district, offering a mixed fleet of human-driven and autonomous Robotaxi services.

Earlier this year, Pony.ai, Toyota China, and GAC Toyota joined forces to establish a joint venture, Zhui Feng Intelligent, dedicated to L4autonomous Robotaxi services. This partnership leverages Pony.ai and Toyota China’s technological expertise while utilizing GAC Toyota’s manufacturing capabilities.

The collaboration has already yielded tangible results, with the unveiling of the Platinum Zhi 4X Robotaxi concept car at GAC Toyota’s Open Technology Day inJune. Pony.ai’s Vice President, Mo Luyi, announced that the Platinum Zhi 4X is poised to enter the trial production phase, with dedicated production lines at GAC Toyota’s factory being prepared for mass production.

Pony.ai’s recent investment and the rapid progress of its Robotaxiprogram highlight the growing momentum in the autonomous driving sector. With major players like Tesla and established companies like Pony.ai vying for market share, the future of Robotaxi services is poised for rapid development.
