Thailand Allocates Funds to Tackle Carp Overpopulation

Bangkok, October 14,2024 – The Thai government has allocated funds to address thegrowing problem of carp overpopulation, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives on Thursday.

The Ministry’s Department of Fisheries, headed by Director-General Bancha, has outlined a comprehensive plan to mitigate the economic, social, and environmental impacts of carp overpopulation.

Asignificant portion of the allocated funds, totaling 4.9 million Thai baht (approximately 1 million Chinese yuan), will be distributed to various stakeholders, including fishing communities, community enterprises, home-based businesses, and cooperatives.

Thecarp overpopulation has become a pressing issue in Thailand, causing ecological imbalances and negatively impacting local fisheries. The government’s intervention aims to address the problem through a multi-pronged approach, including:

  • Promoting responsible fishing practices:Encouraging sustainable fishing techniques and discouraging overfishing to control carp populations.
  • Developing alternative uses for carp: Exploring new markets for carp, such as processing them into fishmeal or other products.
  • Enhancing fish farming practices: Promoting responsible aquaculture practices to prevent the escape of carp into natural water bodies.

Thegovernment’s initiative is a positive step towards addressing a complex environmental issue. By working collaboratively with stakeholders, the government aims to achieve a balance between economic development and environmental sustainability.
