North Korea’s Sports Minister Visits Russia to Boost Sports Cooperation

Seoul, October14, 2024 – Kim Il-guk,North Korea’s Minister of Physical Culture and Sports, embarked on a visit to Russia on October 14th, according to a statement from the Russian Embassyin Pyongyang.

The visit comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the sports sector. Kim Il-guk is expected to attend the12th Russia – Strong Sports Nation International Sports Forum in Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan. He will also hold talks with Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev.

Discussions during the visitare expected to focus on preparations for the North Korea-Russia weightlifting competition scheduled for November in Pyongyang. Both sides are expected to exchange views on further cooperation in the sports sector.

The visit follows the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between North Koreaand Russia in 2023, which has led to increased cooperation in various fields, including sports. High-level exchanges in the sports sector have been particularly active, with both countries seeking to strengthen ties through shared sporting interests.

Alexander Matsegora, the Russian Ambassador to North Korea, saw Kim Il-guk off at Pyongyang International Airport.
