For decades, many NES owners have wondered about the purpose of the expansion port locatedbeneath the iconic console. While the Japanese Famicom saw some groundbreaking peripherals, the Western market remained largely untouched. Now, nearly 40 years later, athird-party add-on promises to connect the NES to modern devices and Famicom peripherals.

RetroTime’s upcoming NES Bluetooth Hub is now availablefor pre-order. This is the first accessory designed for the system’s mysterious expansion slot in almost 40 years.

The NES Hub supports up to four controllers and other devices via Bluetooth. RetroTime aims to release the$57 adapter in December. However, buyers should note that the adapter is only compatible with the earlier NES-001 model.

NES Bluetooth Hub

Installation is relatively straightforward, requiring no soldering. With the console powered off, remove the bottom cover, cut a small piece securing the second cover, and insert the hub. Route the antenna cable from the bottom of the add-onthrough the channel to the side of the NES and attach the antenna.

Once installed, a sync button should be visible above an additional port on the hub, located on the bottom left of the console. It will blink when the NES is powered on. RetroTime has not specified which Bluetooth controllers are compatible. However, the devicedoes support wireless mice and keyboards.

Connecting Multiple Controllers

Connecting more than two wireless controllers requires configuring the Multitapto dual mode, which causes the hub to emulate the NES’ four-player adapter. Connecting two wired controllers alongside wireless controllers allows them to share input in single-player games.

Additional Features

Another feature, Extended Audio, allows certain Famicom games to utilize additional sound channels. The hub includes three DIP switches that support NES audio modifications.

The NES Hub’s firmware updates and documentation are available online. This innovative accessory opens up new possibilities for NES enthusiasts, bridging the gap between classic gaming and modern technology. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of the NES and its potential for futureinnovation.
