E. coli Contamination in Limburg: Over 13,000 HouseholdsAdvised to Boil Water

Venray, Netherlands – October 12, 2024 – Over 13,000 households in the Venray region of Noord-Limburg, Netherlands, are facing a weekendof boiling their drinking water after the discovery of E. coli bacteria in the local water supply. Waterleiding Maatschappij Limburg (WML), the regional water company,issued the advisory on Friday, urging residents to boil their water for at least three minutes before consumption.

The contamination was detected during routine checks conducted by WML. While the company emphasizes that the levels of E. coli found are slight, they pose a potential health risk, particularly for vulnerable individuals like infants, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

E. coli bacteria are commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals. While most strains are harmless,some can cause severe gastrointestinal illness, characterized by diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and vomiting.

WML is currently investigating the source of the contamination. The company has not yet released any information about the potential cause, but they are working diligently to identify the issue and implement corrective measures.

The boiling advisory willremain in place until further notice. WML is urging residents to follow the instructions carefully and to avoid using unboiled water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and preparing baby formula.

The company has also set up a dedicated hotline for residents to receive updates and address any concerns.
