US Denies Secret Talks with Iran on Regional Ceasefire, Amidst Escalating Middle East Conflict

Amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, reportsemerged of secret negotiations between the US, Arab states, and Iran aimed at reaching a regional ceasefire agreement. The Israeli Channel 12, citing anonymous Israeli sources, claimed that these negotiations were aimed at preventing further attacks on Israel by Iranian proxies, including Hezbollah.

However, the US State Department vehemently denied any involvement or knowledge of suchtalks. No one has approached the United States with such a proposal, and we are not negotiating with any country on such a proposal, said State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller during a press briefing on October 9th. He added, I can’t comment on a hypothetical proposal that I’m not even sure exists in reality. Obviously, we welcome an end to conflict in the entire region.

Miller further emphasized that the Channel 12 report does not reflectactual diplomatic conversations.

While the US denies involvement, Hezbollah’s second-in-command, Naim Qassem, expressed support for a ceasefire through diplomatic means, a significant shift from their previous stance. Qassem, however, did not mention the previously insisted precondition of a ceasefire in Gaza.

Despite this subtle change, the Middle East remains on edge. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to press for a ground offensive in Lebanon, threatening to destroy Lebanon as we destroyed Gaza. Israel is also gearing up for potential retaliatory strikes against Iran, with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant not ruling out attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Adding fuel to the fire, US President Joe Biden reportedly spoke with Netanyahu on October 9th to discuss Israel’s plans to strike Iran. This has prompted questions from international media, particularly Al Jazeera, regarding the US’s role in the escalating conflict. For a year, Washington has beenverbally calling for a ceasefire while simultaneously continuing to provide Israel with political and military support, Al Jazeera questioned. Is this ongoing and expanding war a failure of US diplomacy, or is it the true desired outcome? Is the Biden administration seeking to de-escalate the situation, or is it pushing for a Middle East war?

The situation remains highly volatile, with the US’s denial of secret negotiations adding another layer of complexity to the already tense regional dynamics. The ongoing conflict and the potential for further escalation raise concerns about the future of the Middle East and the role of the US in the region.
