香格里拉, Yunnan Province – Two men have died while hiking onHaba Snow Mountain in Yunnan Province during the recent National Day holiday, according to local media reports. The incident has sparked concern about the safety of hiking in theregion, particularly for those who underestimate the challenges posed by high altitudes.

Haba Snow Mountain, with its peak reaching 5,396 meters,is known for its relatively accessible routes and moderate elevation gain, often described by outdoor enthusiasts as a walk in the park. However, the recent deaths highlight the potential dangers even for experienced hikers.

Rescue Team Analysis: One DeathDue to Illness, the Other Possibly Due to Hypothermia and Getting Lost

The Yunnan Provincial Mountain Rescue Team, Haba Division, which participated in the rescue efforts, has provided insights into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

On October2nd, a local guide, a young man from the area, died while leading a group on a hike to Black Sea Lake. According to Li Shujun, head of the Haba Division, the guide likely succumbed to a pre-existing medical condition that was exacerbated by the high altitude and challenging weather conditions.

The second fatality occurred on October 4th. A young male hiker, who had entered the mountain from the undeveloped western slope without authorization, was found deceased by a group of hikers near the Black Sea Camp. Rescue team members arrived at the scene to find the man unresponsive.

Li Shujun explained that thehiker’s companions had descended earlier due to health issues and reported him missing after failing to meet up with him. The hiker was found with his phone connected to a power bank and his ID card nearby, suggesting he had attempted to call for help.

The rescue team believes the hiker likely died from hypothermia and disorientation. Thearea where he was found is known for its complex terrain, and heavy fog and low temperatures are common during the National Day holiday.
