China’s Largest Oil Field, Changqing, Surpasses 1 Billion Tons of Oiland Gas Production

Changqing Oilfield, the largest oil and gas field inChina, has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 1 billion tons of cumulative oil and gas production. This achievement, reported by CCTV-1 on October 5th, highlights the field’s crucial role in China’s energy security.

Changqing, located in the Ordos Basin, boasts an estimated85.88 billion tons of oil and 10.7 trillion cubic meters of natural gas reserves. The field also holds abundant resources of coal, rock salt, coalbed methane, and uranium. However, extracting oil and gasfrom the field’s dense reservoirs has posed significant challenges.

To overcome these challenges, Changqing Oilfield has undertaken extensive technological research and development. This has led to the development of groundbreaking geological theories for rapid resource acquisition, including themastery of key technologies such as 3D seismic exploration in loess plateaus, rapid horizontal drilling, and factory-scale volume fracturing. These advancements have enabled significant breakthroughs in the extraction of oil and gas from three-low reservoirs, characterized by low permeability, low porosity, and low reserves.

Changqing Oilfieldhas consistently maintained a high and stable production level for the past 11 years, exceeding 50 million tons annually. This remarkable output accounts for approximately one-sixth of China’s total oil and gas production.

The field’s continued success is a testament to China’s commitment to technological innovation and itsefforts to secure its energy future. Changqing’s achievements demonstrate the potential of China’s oil and gas industry to overcome technical challenges and contribute significantly to the country’s economic growth and energy independence.
