Toyota’s US Sales Plunge 21% in September, Marking FourthConsecutive Monthly Decline
Toyota, despite remaining the top-selling brand in theUS automotive market, has experienced a consistent decline in sales. The Japanese automaker reported a 21% year-over-year drop in September sales, marking thefourth consecutive month of sales decline. However, Toyota’s cumulative year-to-date sales remain 6% higher than last year.
The declinewas particularly pronounced in the sedan segment. Corolla sales dropped 31% year-over-year, Mira sales plummeted 77% to just 30 units, and GR86 sales fell nearly 50% to498 units compared to September 2022. The Crown crossover also experienced a significant 66% sales decline, although the newly launched Crown Signia SUV saw double the sales, partially offsetting the overall drop.Camry sales remained relatively stable, while Supra and Prius sales increased by 17% and 21% respectively.
Even in the pickup truck and SUV segment, traditionally strong performers for Toyota, sales declined. The popular RAV4 saw an 18% drop in sales. Other models like 4Runner,Highlander, Sequoia, Tacoma, and Corolla Cross also experienced significant sales declines in September. Only the Tundra and BZ4X saw modest increases, at 5% and 12% respectively.
In its sales announcement, Toyota highlighted the success of its electric vehicles. The company stated that hybrid, plug-inhybrid, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles accounted for 48% of its total September sales, a 25% year-over-year increase.
Lexus, Toyota’s luxury brand, also saw strong electric vehicle performance. September sales increased 25% year-over-year,outpacing the brand’s overall 15% decline. Year-to-date sales of Lexus electrified products, including the RX hybrid, RX plug-in hybrid, and all-electric RZ, have increased 44% compared to last year.
Due to the overall slowdown in electric vehicle salesin the region, Toyota has pushed back its plans to begin US production of electric SUVs from 2025 to 2026.
