A Cautious Optimist: Yuanyue Robotics’ Wang Xingxing on theEve of Humanoid Robot Revolution

By [Your Name], Professional Journalist and Editor

In the burgeoning field of humanoid robotics and embodied intelligence, Yuanyue Robotics stands out as a prominent player. The company is best known for its strong hardware capabilities, evident in both its performance and cost-effectiveness. Last year, its first-generation general-purpose humanoid robot, H1, showcased impressive capabilities, including running, backflips, and remarkable resilience to kicks. This year, its second-generation robot, G1, is priced at a mere 99,000 yuan, significantly lower than its competitors, which typically cost hundreds of thousands, even millions of yuan.

This remarkable achievement is built upon years of accumulated expertise in quadrupedal robots. Yuanyue’s founder, Wang Xingxing, explains that the underlying technology for quadrupedal robots and bipedal robots is fundamentally similar. This allowed Yuanyue to develop its humanoid robot products with just three employees in less than six months.

Wang Xingxing attributes Yuanyue’s strong hardware capabilities to the company’s extensive experience in both software and hardware. In 2013, while still a graduate student, he designed themotor and control algorithms for his first quadrupedal robot, XDog, using less than 20,000 yuan. This groundbreaking project was one of the first of its kind globally. In 2016, recognizing the market demand for XDog, Wang Xingxing left his studies to establish Yuanyue Robotics. The company quickly attracted attention, including Variable Capital, a venture capital firm under GeekPark, which led its angel round of funding the following year.

Today, Yuanyue’s robot bodies (hardware) are purchased by research institutions and tech companies worldwide for research purposes. Its quadrupedal robots, including the consumer-grade Go2 and its new wheel-legged version, Go2-W, are used in industrial applications. Earlier this year, Yuanyue announced a new round of B2 funding worth nearly 1 billion yuan, solidifying its position as one of the highest-valued companies in the roboticssector.

However, AI has introduced a new variable into the robotics landscape. Wang Xingxing believes that AI, not hardware, is the biggest bottleneck in the humanoid robot industry. The emergence of ChatGPT two years ago offered a potential path for humanoid robots to evolve with truly intelligent brains, becoming autonomous agents capable of perception, decision-making, and execution. This could lead to the development of universal service capabilities in industrial and domestic settings, creating a trillion-yuan market opportunity.

Wang Xingxing emphasizes that while hardware is crucial, AI is the key to unlocking the full potential of humanoid robots. He advocates for a cautious approach, focusing on building robusthardware while patiently waiting for the emergence of powerful AI technologies. This strategy reflects a balanced perspective, acknowledging the significant challenges and opportunities presented by this rapidly evolving field.
