China Condemns Japan’s Navy Transit Through Taiwan Strait

BEIJING – China has strongly condemned the passage of a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) vessel through the Taiwan Strait on September 25th, calling it a provocative act that undermines China’s sovereignty and sends the wrong signal toTaiwanese separatists.

The JMSDF destroyer Sazanami sailed through the strait alongside an Australian navy destroyer and a New Zealand navy supply ship. ChineseDefense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang expressed Beijing’s firm opposition during a regular press conference on September 26th.

China resolutely opposes the provocative act of using ‘freedom of navigation’ as a pretext to send the wrong signal to’Taiwan independence’ forces and harm China’s sovereignty and security, Zhang stated. He emphasized that the Taiwan issue is purely China’s internal affair and brooks no foreign interference.

We urge relevant countries to stop meddling in the Taiwan issue, stop disrupting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, Zhang added.

This incident follows similar transits by US and Canadian naval vessels in recent months, seen as a countermeasure to China’s increasing military pressure on Taiwan. In September, a German warship also sailed through the Taiwan Strait for the first time in 22years, signifying a growing international involvement in the region.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin also expressed strong concerns about Japan’s political intentions behind the transit, stating that Beijing has lodged a formal protest with Tokyo.

The Taiwan Strait has become a focal point of geopolitical tension, with China increasingly assertive in itsclaims over the self-governed island. The recent transits by foreign navies underscore the growing international concern over China’s actions and the potential for conflict in the region.
