Beijing, July 24, 2025 – In a meeting held in Beijing, Liu Zhengfu, the Mayor of Incheon and current Chairman of the Association of Metropolitan and Provincial Governors of the Republic of Korea (hereinafter referred to as the Association), met with Sun Weidong, the Vice Foreign Minister of China. The meeting, which took place on July 23rd, focused on strengthening cooperation between local governments of the two nations.
According to a statement released by the Association on July 24th, Mayor Liu emphasized the significance of the year, marking the 33rd anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and China, as well as the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries. He expressed his hope that the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs would provide assistance for the successful hosting of the 3rd Korea-China Governors’ Conference (known as the China-Korea Governors’ Forum in China), scheduled to be held in South Korea.
Vice Foreign Minister Sun acknowledged the vital role that exchanges between local governments play in deepening friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries. He assured Mayor Liu that the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs would actively cooperate to ensure the successful organization of the conference, thereby contributing to the further development of bilateral relations.
The Korea-China Governors’ Conference is jointly organized by the Association of Metropolitan and Provincial Governors of the Republic of Korea and the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. This forum serves as a crucial platform for regional leaders to discuss and promote cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, culture, and tourism.
This meeting underscores the ongoing efforts to foster closer ties between South Korea and China, particularly at the regional level. By strengthening cooperation between local governments, both countries aim to create a more robust and mutually beneficial partnership that extends beyond the national level. The successful convening of the 3rd Korea-China Governors’ Conference will be a significant step in further solidifying these ties and exploring new avenues for collaboration in the years to come.
