Seoul, South Korea – A South Korean court has rejected a request from the independent prosecutor investigating former President Yoon Suk-yeol for an arrest warrant in connection with an alleged insurrection case. The decision, announced on June 25th, follows a request filed by Special Prosecutor Cho Eun-seok with the Seoul Central District Court.
The independent prosecutor’s office stated in a notice to the media that the court dismissed the warrant request based on Yoon’s expressed willingness to cooperate with the investigation if summoned. The special prosecution team has promptly notified Yoon and his legal representatives to appear for questioning at 9:00 AM on June 28th. Failure to comply with this summons could lead to a renewed request for an arrest warrant, the team warned.
The special prosecution team had sought the arrest warrant on the grounds of suspected obstruction of official duties through illicit means, abuse of power, and instigation of abuse of power. In their justification, the team cited Yoon’s previous three refusals to comply with police summonses and his assertion that the independent prosecutor’s investigation was unconstitutional, leading them to believe he had no intention of voluntarily cooperating with the inquiry.
This development marks a significant turn in the ongoing investigation into the alleged insurrection, raising questions about the future course of the probe and the potential legal ramifications for the former president. The coming days will be crucial as Yoon Suk-yeol is expected to appear for questioning, and the independent prosecutor’s team weighs its next steps based on his cooperation.
