Beijing, April 19, 2025 – Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu, in his capacity as China’s BRICS Coordinator, held a collective meeting with ambassadors from BRICS member states and partner countries in Beijing on April 18, 2025. The meeting served as a platform to reaffirm China’s commitment to the BRICS partnership and address pressing global issues, particularly those related to international trade.
During the meeting, Vice Minister Ma articulated China’s policy stance on the United States’ extensive use of tariffs. He stated that the U.S.’s widespread imposition of tariffs and initiation of trade wars are detrimental to the global economy.
The meeting underscores China’s continued emphasis on strengthening cooperation within the BRICS framework, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa, as well as engaging with partner nations. This engagement comes at a crucial time as the global landscape faces increasing economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.
BRICS: A Growing Force in Global Governance
The BRICS nations have increasingly asserted their role as a significant force in global governance, advocating for a more equitable and multipolar world order. The bloc has focused on fostering economic cooperation, promoting sustainable development, and addressing global challenges such as climate change and pandemics.
China, as a key member of BRICS, has consistently championed multilateralism and open trade. Its concerns regarding the U.S.’s tariff policies reflect a broader apprehension about the rise of protectionism and its potential to disrupt global supply chains and hinder economic growth.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Partnerships and Addressing Global Challenges
The meeting between Vice Minister Ma and the BRICS ambassadors highlights the importance of dialogue and collaboration in navigating the complex challenges facing the international community. As the world grapples with trade disputes, geopolitical uncertainties, and the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the BRICS partnership offers a valuable platform for promoting stability and fostering shared prosperity.
Moving forward, it is anticipated that BRICS nations will continue to strengthen their cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, technology, and security. By working together, these countries can contribute to a more balanced and inclusive global order that benefits all nations.
