Apple AirTag 2: Enhanced Tracking Capabilities Expected Mid-2025
Apple is poised to release an upgraded version of its popular AirTag trackingdevice, according to reliable industry sources. The new AirTag 2, codenamed B589, is expected to hit the market in mid-2025, boasting significant improvements in location accuracy and anti-tampering features. This follows years of speculation and hints from analysts and insiders.
The news comes from Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg reporter with a proven track record of accurately predicting Apple’s product releases. In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman confirmed the AirTag 2’s existence and projectedlaunch timeframe. This corroborates earlier predictions from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who, while initially projecting a late 2024 release, later revised his estimate to sometime in 2025. The delay, whose reasonsremain unstated, doesn’t appear to have significantly impacted Apple’s development timeline.
Gurman attributes the delay to the complexity of integrating new technologies. The core improvement lies in the upgraded chip powering the AirTag 2. It’s highly likely this will be Apple’s second-generation UltraWideband (UWB) chip, first introduced in the iPhone 15 lineup last year. This advanced chip promises a substantial increase in the precision and range of location tracking. The enhanced UWB capabilities will allow for more accurate pinpointing of the AirTag’s location, even in challenging environments.
Beyondimproved tracking, Gurman suggests the AirTag 2 will incorporate design changes focused on security. The built-in speaker, a frequent target for removal by malicious actors, is expected to be more difficult to detach, further hindering unauthorized tracking attempts. However, Gurman anticipates the overall design will remain largely consistent withthe current model, maintaining its familiar aesthetic.
While Gurman hasn’t detailed specific integration specifics, Kuo previously hinted at potential synergy between the AirTag 2 and Apple’s Vision Pro headset. The exact nature of this integration remains unclear, but it suggests Apple may be exploring innovative ways to utilize the enhancedtracking capabilities within its broader ecosystem.
The AirTag 2 represents a significant upgrade for Apple’s item-tracking solution. The combination of improved accuracy, enhanced security, and potential integration with other Apple devices promises to solidify its position as a leading product in the increasingly competitive market for smart trackers. The mid-2025 launch date provides ample time for Apple to finalize development and ensure a smooth rollout of this highly anticipated product.
