##Across 2,100 Kilometers, Cord Blood Saves 7-Month-Old Infant with Early-Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease

**News Content:**

A 7-month-old girl named “Hua Hua” (pseudonym) was diagnosed with very early-onset inflammatory bowel disease (VEOIBD), a rare and severe condition that caused her to experience fever, pneumonia, diarrhea, oral ulcers, and rectal bleeding. The disease also severely impacted her growth and development. Faced with this challenge, the medical team decided to perform a hematopoietic stem cell transplant for Hua Hua, and the “life-saving blood” camefrom the Guangdong Provincial Cord Blood Bank, 2,100 kilometers away.

VEOIBD patients, in addition to common intestinal symptoms, also experience immune deficiencies. Hua Hua, due to poor intestinal absorption, suffered from severemalnutrition, weighing only 5.4 kilograms. To help her fight pneumonia and boost her immunity, the medical team searched for a suitable hematopoietic stem cell donor.

Fortunately, the Guangdong Provincial Cord Blood Bank found a cord blood unit that matched Hua Hua’s blood type and met clinical requirements. This cord blood unitwas collected on June 12, 2020, from Huizhou Central People’s Hospital. To ensure this “life spark” reached Hua Hua on time, the Guangdong Provincial Cord Blood Bank’s escort team decided to leave early and air transport the cord blood to Beijing.

On June 28, Hua Hua received the cord blood transfusion at Beijing Children’s Hospital. With the implantation of neutrophils and platelets, Hua Hua’s mental state improved, and she was discharged smoothly. On August 21, Hua Hua returned to the hospital for a follow-up visit, and the results showed that all herphysical indicators had recovered well.

Chen Jiao, Deputy Director of the Special Needs Ward at Beijing Children’s Hospital, stated that choosing cord blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has two advantages: firstly, cord blood is physically preserved, and once tested and qualified, it can be released from the bank at any time; secondly, once cord blood is successfully implanted, the risk of chronic rejection is low, allowing the child to have a better quality of life.

Chen Jiao also emphasized that the future applications of autologous cord blood will become increasingly extensive. Families with the financial means can consider storing cord blood or choosing to donate it. This willenrich the cord blood bank, making it easier for doctors to find suitable cord blood during clinical treatment, saving more lives.

As of July 31, 2023, the Guangdong Provincial Cord Blood Bank has released 5,086 cord blood units, helping 3,794 patientswith various diseases. Hua Hua’s story once again demonstrates the positive role of cord blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in treating primary immunodeficiency diseases in children, bringing hope for life to more children suffering from these diseases.
