Seoul, South Korea – June 16, 2024 – LG Energy Solution (LGES) has secured a deal to supply its 46-series cylindrical batteries to Chery Automobile, one of China’s top five automakers, according to a press release from the company. This landmark agreement marks the first time a South Korean battery manufacturer has entered into a supply contract for cylindrical batteries with a Chinese automotive company.

The six-year agreement will see LGES provide Chery with 8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of its 46-series batteries, enough to power approximately 120,000 electric vehicles. While the financial details of the contract remain undisclosed, industry analysts estimate its value to exceed 1 trillion Korean won (approximately 5.25 billion RMB).

The 46-series cylindrical battery represents a significant advancement in battery technology. Boasting a capacity and power output five times greater than existing cylindrical batteries, the new battery promises to substantially improve the range and performance of electric vehicles.

LGES plans to commence battery supply in early 2025. The 46-series batteries will be integrated into Chery’s next-generation electric vehicle models, potentially giving the Chinese automaker a competitive edge in the rapidly expanding EV market.

Significance of the Deal

This deal holds significant implications for both LG Energy Solution and the broader electric vehicle industry:

  • Strategic Expansion: The agreement provides LGES with a crucial foothold in the Chinese market, the world’s largest EV market. Partnering with a major player like Chery allows LGES to tap into the growing demand for high-performance batteries in China.
  • Technological Validation: The selection of LGES’s 46-series batteries by Chery validates the company’s technological advancements in battery design and manufacturing. The enhanced performance characteristics of the 46-series batteries are likely to attract other automakers seeking to improve the range and efficiency of their EVs.
  • Competitive Landscape: The deal intensifies competition in the global battery market, where companies like CATL, Panasonic, and SK Innovation are vying for market share. LGES’s entry into the Chinese cylindrical battery market could disrupt existing supply chains and drive further innovation in battery technology.

Looking Ahead

As the electric vehicle market continues to grow, the demand for advanced battery technology will only increase. LG Energy Solution’s partnership with Chery Automobile positions the company for continued success in the global EV battery market. The performance of the 46-series batteries in Chery’s vehicles will be closely watched by the industry, potentially influencing future battery technology choices for automakers worldwide.
