Taipei – In response to concerns over the impact of U.S. tariffs, local leaders from 15 counties and cities in Taiwan have suggested opening the island to tourists from mainland China. The proposal was made during a Joint Countermeasures Conference of County and City Leaders held in Taipei on Wednesday evening by the Kuomintang (KMT).

The meeting, convened on April 10, 2025, saw local officials gather to discuss strategies for mitigating the potential economic fallout from tariffs imposed by the United States. Among the key recommendations was a call to ease restrictions on mainland Chinese tourists visiting Taiwan. Participants argued that boosting tourism from the mainland could help offset any negative economic consequences stemming from the tariffs.

The proposal also included calls to end political infighting.

The move to propose opening up to mainland tourists reflects a growing concern among some sectors in Taiwan about the potential economic repercussions of ongoing trade tensions. By attracting more visitors from the mainland, these local leaders hope to stimulate the island’s economy and create new opportunities for businesses.

The proposal now faces further discussion and consideration by relevant authorities in Taiwan. Its implementation would require adjustments to existing regulations and policies governing cross-strait tourism.
