Moscow, March 17 – Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, Andrei Rudenko, met with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui and Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jong Gyu in Pyongyang on March 15 to discuss the schedule for highest-level contact between the two countries, according to a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry today.
The visit follows Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invitation to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to visit Moscow during his trip to Pyongyang in June 2024.
During the talks, both sides engaged in an in-depth exchange of views on the development of bilateral relations, including arrangements for high-level and highest-level contacts, with a focus on implementing the agreements reached during President Putin’s state visit to North Korea last year, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
Rudenko emphasized Russia’s firm commitment to fulfilling the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Russia and North Korea, which was signed by the two leaders in Pyongyang last June. The treaty stipulates that if one party is subjected to armed aggression by one or more states and is in a state of war, the other party will immediately provide military and other assistance with all means at its disposal.
This visit underscores the deepening ties between Russia and North Korea, raising concerns among Western nations about the potential implications for regional security and the enforcement of international sanctions against North Korea. The specifics of the highest-level contact being planned remain undisclosed, but analysts speculate that it could involve a summit between Putin and Kim Jong Un in Moscow, further solidifying their strategic alliance.
Conclusion:
The visit of Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister to North Korea highlights the increasingly close relationship between the two nations. The discussion of highest-level contact suggests a potential summit between Putin and Kim Jong Un, which could have significant implications for regional geopolitics and international efforts to address North Korea’s nuclear ambitions. Further developments in this relationship will be closely watched by the international community.
